Standardisés et prêts à l’emploi, nos environnements quotidiens si proches et intimes restent pourtant hermétiques. La société industrialisée fait planer l’anonymat et l’uniformisation sur nos réalités domestiques. De quoi et par qui sont faits ces objets ? Comment ont été produits et façonnés les matériaux qui nous entourent, et que l’on utilise et manipule tous les jours ?
« Désormais située hors champ, la fabrique du quotidien est confiée à des spécialistes. L’économie capitaliste leur a délégué le soin de nous nourrir, de coudre nos vêtements, de bâtir nos maisons et de se préoccuper de nos proches » (Geneviève Pruvost, Quotidien politique, 2024). Résultat : nous oublions la matérialité qui nous fait vivre. Comment nous réancrer à ce quotidien qui se dérobe et l’appréhender à nouveau en tant que milieu de vie au sein duquel l’humain coexiste avec d’autres êtres ?
C’est à partir de cette exploration proposée par la sociologue Geneviève Pruvost que l’exposition souhaite donner la voix à ces artistes qui tournent leur regard vers tout ce qui peuple leurs espaces ordinaires, exerçant un régime d’attention et de présence renouvelé, situé hors des réflexes de la consommation. Iels se plongent alors dans des gestes intuitifs, infiltrent les savoir-faire anciens avec la connaissance actuelle, en se confrontant aux matières disponibles dans leur lieu de vie et de travail immédiat, souvent frugal. Leurs expériences sensibles de ce quotidien, aux prises avec nos besoins vitaux, se transforment en moments de partage, d’émancipation personnelle et collective, et d’exploration poétique au cœur du vivant. Dans l’intimité du foyer, l’art vient ainsi alimenter « Le souffle de la subsistance », et par ricochets, celui de la résistance aux diktats du consumérisme.

Die Ausstellung in den Räumen von La Kunsthalle und von La Filature in Mulhouse besteht aus zwei Kapiteln.
So nah und intim unsere standardisierten und direkt einsetzbaren Alltagsumgebungen auch sind, sie bleiben doch hermetisch. Die Industriegesellschaft verbreitet Anonymität und Vereinheitlichung in unseren häuslichen Realitäten. Aus was und von wem werden die Objekte, Oberflächen und Materialien, die uns umgeben und die wir täglich verwenden und bedienen, gemacht? Die Fabrik des Alltags befindet sich ausserhalb unserer Sichtweite und befindet sich in der Hand von Fachleuten. Die kapitalistische Wirtschaft hat ihnen die Aufgabe übertragen, uns zu ernähren, unsere Kleidung zu nähen, unsere Häuser zu bauen und sich um unsere Angehörigen zu kümmern. Ergebnis: Wir vergessen die Materialität, die uns leben lässt. Wie können wir uns in diesem Alltag, der sich uns entzieht, neu verankern, so dass wir ihn wieder als «Lebensraum, in dem die Menschheit mit anderen Lebewesen zusammenlebt» betrachten können?
Ausgehend von einem Ansatz der Soziologin Geneviève Pruvost, den sie in ihrem Werk Quotidien politique (La Découverte, 2024) vorstellt, will die Ausstellung Künstler*innen eine Stimme geben, die ihren Blick auf all das richten, was sich in ihren Alltagsräumen befindet, und so ausserhalb von Konsumreflexen eine Form der Aufmerksamkeitsausübung und eine erneuerte Präsenz praktizieren. Sie geben sich also intuitiven Gesten hin, bringen althergebrachtes Wissen in den aktuellen Kenntnisstand ein, indem sie sich mit den in ihrem direkten Lebens- und Arbeitsumfeld verfügbaren Materialien konfrontieren. Im Herzen des Lebendigen werden ihre feinfühligen Erfahrungen dieses Alltags in Berührung mit unseren Grundbedürfnissen zu Momenten der Teilhabe und der poetischen Erforschung; gleichzeitig wird Le souffle de la subsistance (dt.: Der Atem des Fortbestands) von ihnen genährt.

An exhibition in two parts to be discovered at La Kunsthalle and La Filature in Mulhouse.
Standardized and ready to use, our daily environments are so close and intimate yet so tightly sealed off. Our industrial society veils our domestic realities in anonymity and uniformity. Who makes the objects, surfaces, and materials that surround us, that we use and handle every day, and of what are they made?
The production of the everyday has been handed over to behind-the-scenes specialists. Our capitalist economy has delegated to them the tasks of feeding us, sewing our clothes, building our homes, and caring for our loved ones. As a result, we lose touch with the materiality that sustains us. How can we find a new anchorage for ourselves in this elusive daily life and once again grasp it as a “living environment in which humans coexist with other beings”?
Drawing inspiration from sociologist Geneviève Pruvost’s book Quotidien politique (La Découverte, 2024), this exhibition features artists who turn their gaze toward all of the objects that populate their ordinary surroundings, cultivating a renewed sense of attention and presence outside the grasp of consumer reflexes. Adopting intuitive gestures, they infuse traditional know-how with contemporary knowledge as they engage with the materials available in their immediate, often modest daily environments. Their sensitive experiences of this everyday life entangled with vital needs are transformed into moments of sharing and poetic exploration at the heart of the living world, which in turn breathe life into Le souffle de la subsistance.
L’exposition s’inscrit dans le cadre de la Regionale 26, une manifestation réunissant 20 institutions en Allemagne, en France et Suisse et visant à mettre en lumière la production artistique contemporaine de la région tri-rhénane / Die Ausstellung findet im Rahmen von der Regionale 26 statt, einer Veranstaltung von 20 Kunstinstitutionen in Deutschland, Frankreich und der Schweiz, die zeitgenössische Kunst im Dreiländereck ins Rampenlicht stellt / The exhibition is part of Regionale 26, an event bringing together 20 institutions in Germany, France, and Switzerland with the aim of highlighting contemporary artistic production in the Rhine region.
