L’exposition The Night of the Great Season s’articule autour du surréalisme polonais, retraçant les influences historiques en art, théâtre et littérature de ce mouvement plutôt méconnu. Elle s’attache également à décrypter une tendance observée dès les années 2000 chez une jeune génération d’artistes polonais, à la fois influencés par les techniques des surréalistes du début du XXe siècle, telles que la représentation des rêves ou l’écriture automatique, et se plaçant en opposition avec les générations artistiques polonaises précédentes, celles de l’art critique et du réalisme des années 1990. Les artistes présentés dans l’exposition sont à l’origine d’œuvres conçues en creux de la réalité, souvent basées sur le hasard et le subconscient, où dominent le fantastique, la magie et l’imaginaire, d’une manière souvent sombre et parfois dérangeante.

Martha Kirszenbaum (1983) est une commissaire d’exposition indépendante. Elle vit entre Paris et Los Angeles. Après avoir travaillé au MoMA, Centre Pompidou et New Museum à New York, elle a collaboré au Centre d’Art Contemporain de Varsovie, et a été commissaire invitée du Belvédère Museum / 21er Haus de Vienne où elle a organisé deux interventions sur la collection. Elle est depuis janvier 2014, directrice et curatrice de Fahrenheit, un nouveau centre d’art et programme de résidences à Los Angeles.

The exhibition The Night of the Great Season focuses on Polish neo-surrealism, tracing the historical influence of art, theater and literature in this little known artistic movement. The show aims to question a tendency observed in the early 2000s among a generation of young Polish artists influenced by Surrealist techniques from the early 20th century, such as automatic writing and the representation of dreams, while simultaneously placing themselves in opposition to previous generations of Polish artists, such as those of critical art and realism from the 1990s.
The artists presented in this exhibition create works that exist outside of reality, often based on chance and the subconscious, where fantasy, magic and imagination prevail in dark, unsettling, and often disturbing ways.

Martha Kirszenbaum (b.1983) is a curator based in Los Angeles and Paris. She worked at the Department of Media and Performance Art at MoMA, and at the New Museum, New York. Independently, Kirszenbaum was a curator-in-residence at the Center for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, guest curator at the Belvedere Museum/21er Haus in Vienna where she organized two interventions on the collection. Since January 2014, she is the director and curator of Fahrenheit, a new exhibition space and residency program in Los Angeles.
Martha Kirszenbaum is guest curator at La Kunsthalle in 2014.

Die Ausstellung The Night of the Great Season artikuliert sich um den polnischen Surrealismus. Sie schildert die historischen Einflüsse dieser eher unbekannten Bewegung in Kunst, Theater und Literatur. Sie befasst sich ebenfalls damit, eine Tendenz zu entschlüsseln, welche bereits um 2000 bei einer jungen Generation polnischer Künstler zu beobachten war. Diese war durch die Techniken der Surrealisten des Anfangs des 20. Jahrhunderts beeinflusst – wie die Darstellung der Träume oder die automatische Schrift – und zugleich stellte sie sich den vorigen Generationen polnischer Künstler gegenüber, denjenigen der kritischen Kunst und des Realismus der 1990-iger Jahre. Die in der Ausstellung präsentierten Künstler haben Werke geschaffen, die weitab von der Realität konzipiert wurden, oft auf dem Zufall und dem Unterbewusstsein basierend, wo das Fantastische, die Magie und das Imaginäre die Oberhand haben, auf eine oft dunkle und manchmal störende Weise.

Martha Kirszenbaum (1983) ist eine unabhängige Ausstellungskuratorin. Sie lebt zwischen Paris und Los Angeles. Nachdem sie im MoMA, Centre Pompidou und New Museum in New York arbeitete, wirkte sie im Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Warschau mit und wurde eingeladene Kuratorin im Belvedere Museum / 21er Haus in Wien, wo sie zwei Interventionen über die Sammlung organisierte. Sie ist seit 2014 Direktorin und Kuratorin von Fahrenheit, einem neuen Zentrum für Kunst und Residenzprogramm in Los Angeles.
