Formé d’abord au Sénégal puis en Suisse Romande, Omar Ba est avant tout un peintre, même si dans son œuvre la sculpture, le dessin ou la photographie trouvent aussi leur place. De ses peintures, on retient d’abord le fond noir, celui d’où jaillissent les couleurs qu’il donne à ses scènes mi- oniriques, mi- réalistes. On retient également la légèreté de ses coups de pinceau qui semblent emprunter chaque matière représentée à un fragment végétal, vrai ou imaginaire. Des pétales, des plumes, des feuilles, des tiges ou d’autres éléments tirés de la nature, si vivement posés sur la toile qu’ils composent une variété immense de textures. L’artiste réinvente continuellement les motifs de sa palette. Qu’elle soit toile ou carton, la surface lui offre un espace profond qu’il investit millimètre par millimètre pour raconter les histoires qui font sa vision du monde. Formé aux contes, enfant d’Afrique, il adopte une construction de l’image fidèle à la tradition des récits aux forces émotionnelles et aux messages philosophiques. Ce qu’il peint a la puissance de l’irréel et la gravité du constat. Educated first in Senegal and then in Swiss Romandy, Omar Ba is a painter first and foremost, although sculpture, drawing and photography also find their place in his work. The first element that we notice in his paintings is the black background from which the colors of his half-dreamlike, half-realistic scenes spring forth. We also remark how the lightness of his brushstrokes makes any material he depicts seem like a plant fragment, whether real or imaginary. Petals, feathers, leaves, stems and other elements borrowed from nature are placed on the canvas in a lively manner that creates enormous textural variety. The artist continually reinvents his range of motifs. Both canvas and cardboard surfaces provide him with a depth of space, each millimeter of which he fills in to tell the stories that make up his vision of the world. A child of Africa trained in storytelling, the image he builds is faithful to the tradition of emotionally powerful and philosophical narratives. His paintings hold both the power of the unreal and the weight of fact. Behind the bright effusion of color, Ba’s figures and scenes are drawn straight from a history marked by a plethora of political and social issues. Behind the camouflage of each painting lies the complex, wounded, and moving image of contemporary Africa that he shares without reservation as his art exerts its seductive power on the viewer.
The artist’s strength lies in this accessibility, in laying the reality of Africa before the public’s eyes and questioning our “shared destinies” through allegory and metaphor. In Omar Ba’s ontological world, we are all bound together from past to future, giving his paintings universal value.

Omar Ba, der zunächst im Senegal und dann in der französischen Schweiz studierte, ist in erster Linie Maler, obwohl in seinem Werk auch Skulpturen, Zeichnungen und Fotografien ihren Platz finden. Seine Gemälde zeichnen sich vor allem durch den schwarzen Hintergrund aus, von dem sich die leuchtenden Farben halb traumhafter, halb realistischer Szenen abheben. Ebenfalls sticht ins Auge die Leichtigkeit seiner Pinselstriche, die alle dargestellten Materien einem realen oder imaginären Pflanzenfragment zu entlehnen scheinen. Blüten, Federn, Blätter, Stängel und andere Elemente aus der Natur sind so behände auf die Leinwand aufgetragen, dass sie eine unendliche Vielfalt von Texturen bilden. Der Künstler erfindet die Motive seiner Palette stets neu. Ob Leinwand oder Karton, der Untergrund bietet ihm eine Tiefe, die er Millimeter für Millimeter mit den Geschichten seiner Vision der Welt füllt. Als Kind ist er in Afrika mit Märchen aufgewachsen und noch heute bleibt er im Aufbau seiner Bilder der emotionalen Stärke und den philosophischen Botschaften der traditionellen Erzählungen seiner Heimat treu. Seine Gemälde haben die Macht des Irrealen und den Ernst der Feststellung. Hinter den strahlenden, überschwänglichen Farben findet man Figuren und Szenen aus einer von vielen politische und soziale Spannungen geprägten Geschichte. Darin liegt seine Stärke. Er macht die afrikanische Realität für alle sichtbar und hinterfragt unsere gemeinsamen Schicksale in Allegorien und Metaphern. Bei Omar Ba ist die Welt ontologisch, wir sind alle miteinander verbunden, mit der Vergangenheit und der Zukunft. Der Wert seiner Gemälde ist universell.
