La Kunsthalle Mulhouse accueille Alchimia Nova, une exposition de l’artiste belge Anne Marie Maes du 17 février au 30 avril 2023.
Depuis plus de 15 ans, elle pose un regard non anthropocentrique sur le monde, orientant sa recherche sur la relation symbiotique entre l’ensemble des micro-organismes vivants comprenant plantes, bactéries et champignons.
Pour son projet mulhousien, Anne Marie Maes poursuit ses investigations dans le cadre d’une résidence de recherche autour des micro-organismes comme mediums de création et s’intéresse, plus particulièrement, à ce que lui offrent les terres alsaciennes pour créer des œuvres inédites en collaboration avec une équipe de microbiologistes du CNRS – Université de Strasbourg. Suite à de nombreuses cueillettes, Anne Marie Maes élabore une palette de couleurs caractéristique de la région grâce aux pigments obtenus par extraction ou décoction de plantes sauvages, champignons et bactéries du sol.
Au cœur de l’exposition sera installé le Lab for Form & Matter, œuvre-laboratoire-atelier d’artiste, cœur battant de l’interaction avec les scientifiques et les publics. Cet espace de recherche sera activé par l’artiste lors de temps forts durant lesquels elle invitera les publics à participer à son projet.
Alchimia Nova est une exposition vivante et évolutive composée de nouvelles expérimentations et d’œuvres existantes, toutes inspirées par le rythme, l’énergie, la beauté et l’inventivité de la nature.

Anne Marie Maes est une artiste multidisciplinaire qui vit et travaille à Bruxelles. Dans sa pratique, elle combine l’art et la science, avec un intérêt particulier pour la biotechnologie, les écosystèmes et les processus alchimiques. Elle travaille avec une gamme de médias biologiques, numériques et traditionnels, y compris des organismes vivants. Sur le toit de son studio à Bruxelles, elle a créé un laboratoire en plein air et un jardin expérimental où elle étudie les organismes symbiotiques et les processus que la nature utilise pour créer des formes. Les projets à long terme “Bee Agency” et “Laboratory for Form and Matter” – dans lesquels elle expérimente avec des bactéries et des textiles vivants – fournissent un cadre qui a inspiré un large éventail d’installations, de sculptures, de photographies, d’objets et de performances – tous à l’intersection de l’art et de l’écologie.

La Kunsthalle Mulhouse will host Alchimia Nova, an exhibition by Belgian artist Anne Marie Maes, from February 17 to April 30, 2023.
For more than 15 years, the artist has been taking a non-anthropocentric look at the world, focusing her research on the symbiotic relationship between all living micro-organisms, including plants, bacteria and fungi.
For her project in Mulhouse, Maes continues her investigations during a research residency on micro-organisms as a medium of creation, and she is particularly interested in what the Alsatian soils have to offer her for the creation of new works in collaboration with a team of microbiologists from the CNRS – University of Strasbourg. After several harvests, Maes elaborates a palette of colors characteristic of the region using pigments obtained from the extraction or decoction of wild plants, mushrooms and bacteria from the soil.
At the heart of the exhibition will be the Lab for Form & Matter, a work in the form of a combined laboratory and artist’s workshop and the center of the artist’s interactions with scientists and the public. This research space will be set in motion by the artist at key moments when she will invite the public to participate in her project.
Alchimia Nova is a living, evolving exhibition composed of new experiments and existing works, all inspired by the rhythm, energy, beauty and inventiveness of nature.

Anne Marie Maes is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Brussels. Her practice combines art and science, with a particular interest in biotechnology, ecosystems and alchemical processes, and she works with a range of biological, digital and traditional media, including living organisms. On the roof of her studio in Brussels, she has created an outdoor laboratory and experimental garden where she studies symbiotic organisms and the processes nature uses to create form. Her long-term projects « Bee Agency » and « Laboratory for Form and Matter, » in which she experiments with bacteria and living textiles, provide a framework that has inspired a wide range of installations, sculptures, photographs, objects and performances, all at the intersection of art and ecology.
Anne Marie Maes has exhibited her work at art centers and festivals around the world. She received an honorable mention at Ars Electronica for her ongoing research project, « The Intelligent Guerrilla Beehive. »

Vom 17. Februar bis 30. April 2023, zeigt die Kunsthalle Mulhouse Alchimia Nova, eine Ausstellung der belgischen Künstlerin Anne Marie Maes.
Seit mehr als 15 Jahren schaut sie mit einem nicht anthropozentrischen Blick auf die Welt und stellt in das Zentrum ihrer Forschungen die symbiotische Beziehung zwischen Pflanzen, Bakterien und Pilzen.
Während ihrer Residenz betreibt Anne Marie Maes Nachforschungen für das Projekt, was in der Kunsthalle zu sehen ist, beschäftigt sich mit Mikroorganismen als kreatives Mittel und interessiert sich im Besonderen für das, was die Elsässer Erde bietet, um ganz und gar neue Werke in Zusammenarbeit mit der CNRS-Mikrobiologen-Forschergruppe der Universität Straßburg zu erschaffen. Ausgehend von mehreren Bodenproben entwickelt Anne Marie Maes eine Palette von für die Region charakteristischen Farben. Die Pigmente gewinnt sie durch ein Verfahren der Extraktion und des Auskochens von wilden Pflanzen, Pilzen und Bodenbakterien.
Das Herz der Ausstellung ist das Lab for Form & Matter, eine Art Künstler-Labor-Werkstatt, wo Wissenschaftler und das Publikum interagieren. Dieser Forschungsraum wird von der Künstlerin während der Ausstellung und zu bestimmten Zeiten für das Publikum geöffnet – während sogenannter partizipativer Momente.
Alchimia Nova ist eine lebende und sich weiter entwickelnde Ausstellung, die sich aus neuen Experimenten und schon existierenden Werken zusammensetzt. Dabei ist der Rhythmus, die Energie, die Schönheit und die Kreativität der Natur Inspirationsquelle.
Anne Marie Maes lebt und arbeitet als multidisziplinäre Künstlerin in Brüssel. In ihrer Praxis als Künstlerin verbindet sie Kunst und Wissenschaft mit einem besonderen Interesse für die Biotechnologie, Ökosysteme und alchimistische Prozesse. Sie arbeitet mit einer Bandbreite von verschiedenen Materialien – biologisch, digital und traditionell sowie mit lebendigen Organismen. Auf dem Dach ihres Künstlerstudios in Brüssel hat sie ein Freiluftlabor eingerichtet und einen experimentellen Garten angelegt, in denen sie symbiotische Organismen und formgebende Prozesse der Natur untersucht. Die Langzeitprojekte „Bee Agency“ und „Laboratory for Form and Matter“ – während der sie mit Bakterien und lebenden Textilien experimentiert – geben einen Rahmen, in dem eine Vielzahl von Installationen, Skulpturen, Fotografien, Objekte und Performances entstehen – alle geprägt durch die Intersektionalität von Kunst und Ökologie.
Anne Marie Maes stellt ihre Werke in Kunstzentren und bei Festivals weltweit aus. Sie hat für ihr aktuelles Forschungsprojekt „The Intelligent Guerrilla Beehive“ das Prädikat ‚ehrenwert‘ erhalten.
